Darren McGarvey, aka the rapper and hip hop artist Loki, won the Orwell prize for books with his searing Poverty Safari.
As well as making several documentaries on the barriers to success faced by many of Scotland’s poorer communities, he also wrote The Social Distance Between Us, published last year.
In December 2022 he was one of the Reith lecturers tasked with talking about the four freedoms flagged up by former US president Franklin Roosevelt. His Freedom From Want garnered universal praise.
