Tom Devine

Professor Sir Tom Devine is Scotland's pre-eminent historian and one of the most accessible chroniclers of the major events in Scotland's past. His book The Scottish Clearances, A History of the Dispossessed is a magisterial account of the dreadful events in 18th century Scotland where people were evicted from their land and lifestyles in both Highland and Lowland Scotland. Like all Tom Devine's writing, the account is not just rich in detailed research, but the human stories and suffering behind the enforced removal of families and the destruction of their communities.
